Mission Impossible: Finding a Setting Spray That Makes Make-up Truly Transfer‑Proof

You’ve got your make-up done and like the cape to superman’s outfit, your make-up gives you that extra boost to face the world or just hid a pimple or dark under eyes. Either way you’re all set, except for one thing, you wonder how long will this make-up stay. I don’t know about you but my most prominent concern on my mind is will my make-up transfer. Especially if am wearing white. It doesn’t help I end up touching my face number of times even when I try hard not to.

So like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 2, hanging on the edge of a mountain cliff, I was determined to find a setting spray that sets my makeup (i.e. keeps it looking like I just put it on even hours later) and stops my make-up from transferring. Misson accepted.

Mac FIX+ Original Setting Spray

It doesn’t help the fact my skin is sensitive, so I set my sights on the Mac FIX+ Original Setting Spray. This is described as having no alcohol and containing green tea, cucumber extracts and chamomile. Perfect! I thought for my sensitive skin. Did it set my make-up, yes I guess, but nothing jaw-dropping, honestly nothing greatly noticeable. Did it make my make-up transfer proof? Absolutely Not.

TIRTIR Mask Fit Make Up Fixer

As a self-confessed k-beauty obsessed skincare user I was sure that k-beauty world would have an answer to my problem. So the next setting spray I tried was the TIRTIR Mask Fit Make Up Fixer. The shiny red bottle really makes it look more expensive than it is. This has alcohol but other notable ingredients include Centella extract and panthenol. I was ready and excited to yell from the rooftops that again k-beauty reigned supreme. So I sprayed and a few moments after drying, my make-up looked juicy. In your face non-k-beauty setting sprays. Now the real test did it stop my make-up from transferring? Kind of, maybe? My make-up didn’t transfer as much as it would without it but it definitely isn’t transfer proof.

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray Natural Finish

I was done! K-beauty failed me where else could I turn too? I came across Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray Natural Finish. Make-up artists touted it, it was popping in my life everywhere I turned, in the shops, internet ads. So I thought this was clearly a sign from the heavens. The Urban Decay setting spray contains alcohol and other notable ingredients it is described of containing include power set film formers and glycerin. What are power set film polymers? A quick internet search describes this as a term used by Urban Decay to describe the specific blend of film-forming polymers. But what are polymers? So these are described as large molecule (or macromolecule) composed of repeating structural units called monomers tied together like links in a chain. These are stated to be used in beauty and skincare cosmetics and they can be natural or synthetic. These polymers dictate how a product feels and behaves on skin.

Okay so let’s get to the bottom of this. How good was the Urban Decay setting spray? This made my face look juicer than a ripe peach. It definitely set my make-up and it looked great. Time to for me to cash-in on the complete package, I thought. But that didn’t happen, this didn’t stop my make-up from transferring. Like TIRTIR  spray, it had some effect but it definitely wasn’t 100% transfer proof. Like coming back from disappointing package holiday, I tried to look at the positive side but still at the back of my mind, there was the burning thought, is there a setting spray that is 100% transfer proof. If you know of one let me know in the comments.
